Antoni Tàpies at Céret
The latest exhibition at Céret’s Museum of Modern Art is devoted to 16 works by Antoni Tàpies (1923- 2012), to mark the centenary of his birth. The artist has been present in Céret since 1990 when he created the two large works at the museum entrance: black swooshes of paint and symbols ( including the a and t of the artist’s name ) on a base of enamelled lava.
Two paintings in particular, the Tibetan Bell and the Portal, express the artist’s fascination with oriental philosophy. His mostly black and white works are composed of calligraphy and his own signs and symbols. The paint is mixed with sand, rags or string, reflecting his interest in the Japanese concept of the beauty of humble materials. “In a piece of dust is all the universe”, he comments in the film accompanying the exhibition.

Medieval mysticism is perhaps the inspiration for Ales (Catalan for wings) which represents two angels embracing. Although, not religious, Tàpies explored the power of images, be they crosses or mathematical equations. Always the rebel and politically engaged, the artist evoked modern urban protest in Graffiti , which is emblematic of his work.

The exhibition runs from 30 November 2023 to 30 June 2024.
