There are loads of different ways of improving your French. We all learn differently, and as we grow older, one of the greatest blocks to learning is memory. And yet many of us can still sing along to new songs – and remember the words!

Here’s one to start off with……and those of you ‘of a certain age’ will certainly recognize  this much loved tune, written by the late and great Jacques Brel but sung in English by Rod McKuen, Dusty Springfield, Terry Jacks, Barbara Streisand, and Neil Diamond to name but a few.

Meaning ‘don’t leave me’ but translated as ‘If you go away’, the original French lyrics are simple and lovely.

Belgian singer/songwriter Jaques Brel (1929 – 1978) was one of the greats of French chanson, and a major influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers such as David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Marc Almond and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many top performers, particularly in the USA, including Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, Frank Sinatra……

Check out a little bit of useful vocab at the end, but most of the vocabulary is fairly standard ‘daily routine’.

LISTEN

NE ME QUITTE PAS

Ne me quitte pas
Il faut oublier
Tout peut s’oublier
Qui s’enfuit déjà
Oublier le temps
Des malentendus
Et le temps perdu
A savoir comment
Oublier ces heures
Qui tuaient parfois
A coups de pourquoi
Le cœur du bonheur

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Moi je t’offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Où il ne pleut pas
Je creuserai la terre
Jusqu’apres ma mort
Pour couvrir ton corps
D’or et de lumière
Je ferai un domaine
Où l’amour sera roi
Où l’amour sera loi
Où tu seras reine

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Je t’inventerai
Des mots insensés
Que tu comprendras
Je te parlerai
De ces amants là
Qui ont vu deux fois
Leurs cœurs s’embraser
Je te racont’rai
L’histoire de ce roi
Mort de n’avoir pas
Pu te rencontrer

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

On a vu souvent
Rejaillir le feu
D’un ancien volcan
Qu’on croyait trop vieux
Il est paraît-il
Des terres brûlées
Donnant plus de blé
Qu’un meilleur avril
Et quand vient le soir
Pour qu’un ciel flamboie
Le rouge et le noir
Ne s’épousent-ils pas

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Je ne vais plus pleurer
Je ne vais plus parler
Je me cacherai là
A te regarder
Danser et sourire
Et à t’écouter
Chanter et puis rire
Laisse-moi devenir
L’ombre de ton ombre
L’ombre de ta main
L’ombre de ton chien

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Comments

  1. Amazing version! I had not heard it before.

  2. Unforgivable. You forgot to mention Scott Walker, who, with the help of a wonderful orchestral arrangement, sang one of the most soulful versions of this song that I’ve heard (next to Jaque Brel, natch)
    I forgive you nonetheless.
