Following an agreement signed on 1st July 2011 in Banyuls dels Aspres between Autoroutes Sud de France (ASF) and its equivalent in South Catalonia, Autopistas Abertis, it should soon be possible to use your télépéage remote control on the A9 motorway from the Pyrenees-Orientales to Barcelona. The péage from Perpignan to Barcelona is 15€55.
The first phase of work towards the widening of the A9 motorway in the Pyrenees-Orientales will begin in 2012, between exits Perpignan Nord and Sud. The whole project, consisting of adding a futher lane on each side of the motorway, to give 2 X 3 lanes, is expected to be finished by 2020.

However, if you live in the Agglomération de Perpignan Méditerranée ( Baho, Baixas, Le Barcares, Bompas, Cabestany, Calce, Canet-en-Roussillon, Canohes, Cases de Pene, Cassagnes, Espira de l’Agly, Estagel, Montener, Opoul-Perillos, Perpignan, Peyrestortes, Pezilla-la-Rivière, Pollestres, Rivesaltes, Saint-Estève, Saint-Feliu-d’Avall, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, Sainte-Marie, Saint-Nazaire, Saleilles, Le Soler, Tautavel, Torreilles, Toulouges, Villelongue-de-la-Salanque, Villeneuve-de-la-Raho, Villeneuve-la-Rivière, Vingrau) you can benefit from Project ZAP.
Project Zap allows residents of this zone to use the motorway for nothing in an attempt to ‘unconstipate’ the town centre. A slight catch is that you need to register for the télépéage which costs 2€ per month, but the actual stretch of the motorway between Pepignan north and south is not charged.
There have been rumours that holders of the ZAP remote control can also use this in Spain. An ASF spokesperson has just confirmed that this is not so.
Register with ASF (details below) at the toll booth of Perpignan sud with a RIB (bank details) and proof of home address.
