Across the bridge from Ille sur Têt, on the road to Belesta, along a small road on the left running along by the river, lies the ruined village of Casenoves, (‘new houses’ in Catalan).
The clever network of signal towers (tours à signaux) that you see on the high mountain tops around the region date back to the 13th century. They were originally set up by the Rois de Majorque as a defence system to protect the Roussillon from invaders and to enable the passing of information around the region, using fire and smoke signals.

A delightful circuit of 10.5 kilometres which takes about 3hrs 45mins and includes 250 metres of ascent. The official tourist guide book says it takes 2 hours 40 mins – unfortunately we are past the age of fell running!

A delightful circular walk of approximately 1h 20mins with good paths and short ascents and descents inland from Port Vendres.
This is one of our favourite circuits that we have done fairly regularly in the last few years. Recently there have been extensions and improvements to the EV8 cycle path which passes by Sorède, so we decided to try them out.
A delightful and very interesting circuit of 3hrs, with 460metres of ascent. Most of the route is in forest and offers good protection from a warm autumn sun.
