It’s windy!
Having just experienced an unprecedented quantity of rain this month, the Pyrénées-Oriéntales are now facing a record-breaking Tramontane weekend. Gusts of 177kmh were recorded at Cap Béar, 109kmh in Perpignan, and 157kmh near Serralongue in Haut-Vallespir which is the highest ever recorded. People are advised to take care on the roads during the weekend as several trees have been toppled by the strong winds.
Major traffic accident in Perpignan
Rush hour traffic was disrupted in both directions on Friday afternoon following an accident involving a lorry and four cars on the D900 ring-road near Clinique Saint-Pierre. Two of the cars were pinned between the truck and the central embankment and two people had to be cut free from their vehicles. No less than 30 firefighters and two Samu teams were mobilised for this major intervention. Three other victims were taken to hospital but for the moment their condition is unknown.
Fatal accident near Le Perthus
On Friday afternoon the N-11 was closed for several hours following an accident between La Jonquera and Le Perthus. The accident, a head on collision between two cars, caused the death of at least one person (said to be a Frenchman) and there were also two other injuries. The RD900 was closed to traffic from the Auberge du Chene roundabout and motorists were advised to take the motorway if they were planning to cross the border.
Woman raped in Perpignan
A woman in her fifties was taking her rubbish to the bin container room in an apartment building when she was trapped in the room by an individual who threatened her with a knife, raped her, then stole her personal belongings. The traumatised victim was taken to hospital and is still in a state of shock. No arrest has yet taken place and the residents of the Saint-Assiscle area of Perpignan are extremely concerned, with many women afraid to venture out alone.
Thief on a scooter
A young woman has been carrying out a series of thefts in Perpignan, using an electric scooter as her getaway vehicle. She would target properties or vehicles with their doors unlocked, quickly help herself to whatever she could carry, and then make her escape on the scooter. On one occasion when she had entered a property and stolen a computer, jewellery and a handbag, she had been filmed, and thanks to this video evidence the police were able to track her down. The 27 year old will face court ton Tuesday to answer to 19 charges of theft.
Police discover a bonus when arresting burglar
One year after a violent burglary was carried out in Montferrer the police were finally able to track down the perpetrator and visited him at his home in Saint-Marsal in the Haut-Vallespir. While carrying out a search of the house they were astonished to find an impressive stock of drugs including cocaine, weed and cannabis resin. He was also in possession of all the equipment necessary to cultivate marijuana. He was in court on March 18th facing charges of burglary and also the drugs related offences and was given an 18 month suspended sentence and will also have to pay compensation to the victim of the burglary in 2023.
Young boy missing from home
Police have called for help in finding 11 year old Diego who has been missing from his home in Saint-Féliu-d’Amont since Friday. This is the third time the boy has run away from home, the first time being on January 4th and then again last weekend. He left his home last Friday at (.4(pm and was wearing blue Nike jogging bottoms, a burgundy hoodie and a light blue jacket with an orange hood.
