Thanks to the tireless efforts of Justine Wallington and the RIFT team, there’s finally some excellent news for UK nationals living in France under the Withdrawal Agreement.
After months of advocacy, meetings in Paris and Brussels, and countless reports, the confirmation has arrived:
📢 From the second half of September, it will be possible to request your 10-year Withdrawal Agreement permanent residence card (WARP card) online via the official portal:
This is a significant step forward, making the process of renewing WARP cards much simpler and more accessible.
Official confirmation
The French government will shortly publish the announcement on their central websites, including:
Préfectures across France have also been instructed to update their own websites accordingly, so you should soon see the new guidance appear locally.
In the words of the French authorities
Here’s part of the original instruction received by préfectures (translated):
“Préfectures received instructions yesterday to begin rolling out an adapted version of the website demarches-simplifiees.fr specifically for the renewal of ‘Withdrawal Agreement’ residence permits expiring after five years. This deployment will begin from the second half of September. In addition, this specific system will be announced in the coming days on interieur.gouv.fr, service-public.fr, and brexit.gouv.fr. Préfectures have also been instructed to update their own sites.”
Why this matters
When the WARP system was first introduced, UK nationals were told that online renewal might not be available until next year. Thanks to the persistence of RIFT and its admin team, the timeline has been brought forward — a win for the community and a much smoother process for everyone whose five-year cards are soon expiring.
What to do now
- Keep an eye on the official websites above for the official launch.
- If your current 5-year WARP card is due to expire, you’ll soon be able to submit your renewal request entirely online.
- Share this news with other UK nationals in France so no one misses out.
👏 A huge thanks goes to RIFT’s team of volunteers who pushed for this change. Their advocacy shows just how powerful community action can be.
