The Red Box: This expo is over but the photos on this page are sadly reminiscent of what is going on in the world today.

Expo Galérie Marianne, Argelès Village from September 3 to October 29 2022

The Red Box: Previously unseen photos of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) discovered in 2018

Antoni Campañà i Bandranas (1906-1989) was one of the great Catalan photojournalists.

Fiercely republican, he documented 3 years of the war close up and personal: militia men and women, refugees arriving in Barcelona, buildings in ruins after bombing raids, scenes of everyday life – and death.

Traumatised by the war, he hid his photos away.

In 2018, his family discovered nearly 5,000 photographs in two red boxes, hidden for nearly 80 years in his Barcelona home.

This collection covers the Civil War in Barcelona and Republican Catalonia, from the failed coup and the anarchist revolution of 1936, to Franco’s victory and exodus of the Retirada.

In an exhibition coordinated by his nephew, you can see 77 of the prints for the first time in France at the Galerie Marianne in Argelès Village, from September 3 to October 29.
