Attention arnaque: breakdown scam
The latest scam doing the rounds sees fraudsters pose as drivers in distress, asking for help after having broken down. In most cases, the scam is even further disguised by the con artist being accompanied by a woman and children, the perfect family!
Claiming to have no bank card on them, the broken down family appeals to passers by to accompany them to a service station, swapping “valuable jewellery” for cash from the ATM. Of course, the jewellery has no value at all!
In French, this particular scam is nicknamed “the Bulgarian breakdown” (la panne bulgare) because of how often the scammers’ cars are registered to Bulgaria or Romania.
