From the Albères mountain range to the coastal paths and ‘réserve naturelle’ of Mas Larrieu, Argelès has some amazingly contrasting landscapes. Here’s a chance to go off the beaten path with a guided tour for all, organised by the town of Argelès-sur-Mer.

Born in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and now living for the past 12 years in the Pyrenees Orientale, I work with plants, herbs, flowers and chocolate and enjoy mixing the two together when I am not painting watercolour mandalas.

June 1st, on a walk through the vineyards and orchards between Palau del Vidre and Laroque des Albères, I was about to cut a corner and cross a ditch between two vineyards. A woodchat shrike often hunts there for insects, small birds, mice and and lizards, but that day I decided to keep my eyes down and watch where I was putting my feet. It was hot; after all the rain we’d had the grass was very long and encroaching on the track. Perfect for snakes, I thought.

Love ’em or hate ’em, everyone should know a little bit about scorpions shouldn’t they? And the news is better than you would expect. Apparently, the black ones which look quite mean are not actually…
